Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of optimising your business to appear inside AI-generated answers — the responses that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini produce when someone asks a question. It's the layer of search visibility that has opened up since 2023, and the vast majority of Lancashire tradesmen are completely absent from it.
Here's the shift that's happening: when a homeowner in Chorley wants a plumber, they're increasingly asking ChatGPT "who's a reliable plumber near me" before they open Google. The AI engine names businesses — pulled from what's published online, what structured data it can extract from websites, and what authoritative directories it trusts. If you have no schema markup, no llms.txt file, no FAQ pages built for AI extraction, and no presence on the citation sources AI engines trust, you won't appear in those answers. Right now, almost no Lancashire tradesman does.
That's a closing window. AEO builds the technical and content foundations — schema markup, structured FAQs, citation profiles on AI-trusted sources — that get you into those answers. It overlaps with good SEO (authoritative citations, a well-structured site, clear business identity) but the optimisation targets are different: SEO targets Google's ranking algorithm, AEO targets what AI engines decide to quote.
We do both together, from the start. See the full breakdown on our SEO & AEO service page.
